The Karnataka government has unveiled an ambitious plan to rebuild Bengaluru’s iconic Kantirava Stadium at a cost of ₹5,000 crore, adopting a Public‑Private Partnership (PPP) framework. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, who also heads the Sports and Youth Empowerment portfolio, confirmed that cabinet approval will be sought shortly.

Project Highlights

The redevelopment will transform the venue into a world‑class arena featuring a state‑of‑the‑art athletics track, expanded seating, high‑definition screens, and advanced security systems. Dedicated sports science labs, training academies, and community sports zones will be integrated, providing local talent with facilities comparable to global standards.

International Youth Festival

For the first time in its history, Karnataka aims to host an international youth festival in December, January or February. The event will bring together young participants from across India, fostering cultural exchange and sports competition, and leveraging the fact that over 65% of the state’s population is under 35 years old.

Enhanced Incentives for Athletes

New policies will grant a 15% tuition waiver for national‑level athletes and a 25% waiver for international athletes pursuing degree or diploma courses. Additionally, 2% reservation will be allocated for sportspersons in the recruitment for 72,000 government posts. Participants from Karnataka in the Commonwealth and Asian Games will receive a cash incentive of ₹5 lakh each, supplementing existing medal awards.

Coaching Capacity Boost

To address the chronic shortage of qualified coaches, the government has cleared the recruitment of 50 trainers/coaches. This move is expected to elevate the quality of sports education and produce athletes capable of competing on the global stage.

Overall, the initiative signals a strategic shift toward positioning Karnataka as a premier sports hub, intertwining infrastructure development with youth empowerment and economic growth.
