In a tragic incident that has once again raised concerns over construction safety in the Himalayan region, a young worker lost his life inside the under-construction Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. The accident occurred during the early hours of Friday, around 2:00 AM, when a section of the concrete (shotcrete) lining suddenly gave way, trapping a 21-year-old laborer from Jharkhand.

Details of the Incident

According to Prashant Arya, the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi, the collapse happened approximately 900 meters deep into the tunnel from the Barkot entrance. The victim was crushed under the fallen concrete debris. Authorities confirmed that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact circumstances of the death. The project, a critical component of the Central Government's Char Dham All-Weather Road Connectivity Project, is a 4.5-km long tunnel designed to enhance connectivity in the high-altitude region.

The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which is overseeing the construction, has initiated a high-level probe into the accident. An official investigation report is expected to clarify whether the collapse was due to unforeseen geological shifts, structural failure, or a lapse in safety protocols. Until the report is finalized, the exact cause remains speculative.

The Silkyara Tunnel has previously been at the center of a massive national rescue operation. Months ago, a landslide trapped 41 workers inside the tunnel for 17 grueling days, sparking a nationwide conversation about the risks involved in tunneling through the fragile Himalayan terrain.
