In a tragic incident echoing the geological instability of the Himalayan region, a 21-year-old worker lost his life in the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand early Thursday morning. The accident occurred while construction work was in full swing, marking a grim chapter for a project that has historically been at the center of global attention.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to district officials, a massive block of the tunnel's concrete lining collapsed approximately 900 meters inside the tunnel from the Barkot side. The victim, a young man hailing from Jharkhand, was moving through the under-construction section when the slab fell directly onto his neck. He was rushed to the Naugaon Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Administrative Probe and Accountability

Prashant Arya, the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi, has taken immediate cognizance of the fatality. He has directed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Barkot to conduct a rigorous assessment of the site. A primary focus of the investigation will be to determine if the executing agency, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), adhered to the mandatory safety protocols and structural engineering standards required for such high-risk environments.

The NHIDCL has also initiated an internal probe and is preparing a factual report to ascertain the technical cause behind the collapse. Compensation processes for the bereaved family have been fast-tracked by the local administration.

In 2023, the same tunnel became the site of a high-stakes, 17-day rescue operation that successfully freed 41 trapped workers after a landslide blocked their exit. The 4.5-kilometer-long, two-lane tunnel is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹853 crore.
